CROQUET CLUB AFTERNOON
The monthly progressive afternoon to bo held by-the Rotorua Croquet Club took place recently on the club lawns in ideal weather. In* the A grade the trophy for the highest score was won by Mrs. J. Banks, while in the B grado the winner was Mrs. D. Herd. The prizes were later presented by the president, Mrs. J. Banks. Among those present were: —Mrs. Savin, Mrs. J. Banks, Mrs. E. La Trobe Hill, Mrs. M. Manson, Mrs. C. H. C. Worthtngton, Mrs. J. Hesketh, Mrs. W, W. P. Hall, Mrs. C. R. Lloyd, Mrs. T. Parata, Mrs. Dyson (Auckland), Mrs. Grinter, Mrs. Lightbrand, Mrs. Moorehouse, Mrs. Harle, Mrs. Herd and Mrs. Meads.
In spite of the unfavourable weather conditions that prevailed this week there was an excellent attendance of members and visitors at the initial meeting for the year of the Rotorua Travel Circle, which was held in the Women's Clubrooms. The speakers for the evening were Miss McGeorge, of Tauranga, and Miss Stewart, headmistress of the Nelson Ladies' College, both of whom are spending a holiday in Rotorua. "A Trip to Alaska" was the subject of the address given by Miss McGeorge, who gave some intensely interesting descriptions of the life and scenio beauties of that vast extent of territory. The second speaker. Miss Stewart, spoka of a week she had spent in Athens. , The official hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Skene Dixon and Mrs, J. U. Collins. Among those present were:— Mrs. Roe (Auckland), Mrs. Miller (Scotland), Mrs. Bouisson (Auckland), Mrs. Kane (Wellington), Mrs. G. H. French, Mrs. Burnham, Mrs. J. Collins, Mrs. Skene Dixon, Miss McGeorge (Tauranga), Miss Stewart (Christchurch), Miss McEldowney (Wellington). Miss Kane (Wellington), Miss McGill (Wellington), Miss R. Cambie, Miss M. Arthur, Miss G. La Trobe Hill, Miss V. Chong (New Plymouth), Miss P St. Clair, Miss Peart (Wellington), Miss Fennell (Sydney), Miss Penny, Miss M. Hoole. ' One of the most successful functions to be held in the district took place in the Ngongotaha Hall recently when the annual dance and five hundred tournament conducted by the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union attracted a particularly largo attendance. The decoration arrangements carried out by 'an energetic committee were most effective, streamers in the division's colours hanging from the ceiling and festoons of hydrangeas giving the hall a most attractive appearance. The prizewinners in the card tournament were Mr. and Mrs. Bell, of Fairy Springs, while Mrs. R. Dawson was the winner of a consolation trophy. During the evening various items contributed by local artists were interspersed between the dances. The committee responsible for the arrangements were: —Mrs. HE. Florey, Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. Bull, Mrs. Hodges, Mrs. Marcroft, Mrs. Moule, Mrs. Denyer, Mrs. T. Ford. ' . . Mrs. G. Dyson, of Auckland, is visiting Rotorua and is the guest of Mrs. C. H. C. Worthington, of Sophia Street. Miss I. Lazenby, of Hinemoa Street, has returned from a visit to Ohope Beach. „■ , Miss Margaret Nelson, of Gisborne, is the guest of Mrs. J. H. Buddie, of Marguerita Street. Mrs. R. H. Jones, of Hinemoa Street, left last week on a holiday visit to Auckland. - •
Mrs. J. Banks, of Whakarewarewa, has returned from a visit to the Mount. Mrs. R. Copeland Smith, of Te Ngae, is spending the holidays at the Mount, Tauranga. Mrs. J. McDowell, of Lytton Street, is visiting Mount Maunganui. Mrs. M. Spens Black and family, of Tarewa Road, is spending a holiday at Maketu.
Mrs. B. Smith, of Gwendoline Street, has left on a visit to Auckland. Miss M. Gresham, of Sunset Road, has returned from a visit to Auckland. Mrs. K. Stace, of Hunterville, is the guest of her mother, Mrs. Benner, of Union Street.
Mrs. R. Cook has returned to Waiotapu from a visit to Sydney. Mrs. C. Grove, of Rotorua, has loft on a brief visit to New Plymouth.
