CARTING OF CREAM
LOAD LIMITS EXCEEDED OFFENCES AT TE AWAMUTU rIIV TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT^ TE AWAMUTU. Friday Several cream carriers in the Te Awamutu district were prosecuted in the Magistrate's Court for overloading during November. The excess weights ranged up to 24cwt. Counsel for defendants, who were all members of the Waipa Master Carriers' Association, claimed that the carrying business and the dairy industry were being penalised by unnecessary regulations. Cream carting was carried out uneconomically and local bodies should ease the burden by allowing excess loads during the flush of the season. A second trip to carry excess cans offering would ho impracticable. It was stated that the Waipa Cqunt.v Council at its December meeting had decided to raise the road classification by half a ton. but the present offences had occurred prior to that decision. inspector Metcalfe, for the Waikato County Council, said he was prosecuting because the carriers had not procured the necessary licences for higher loads.
The magistrate imposed fines of £1 and £2, with costs. He said carriers knew they would probably have to overload during the flush period, and they could easily have raised their licensed load limits. Counsel had claimed that the carrying was a service to the ratepayers, but other users of the road were entitled to consideration. The licence foes were pooled so that Waipa ratepayers were not the only people affected.
