NEW FLYING RECORD

LAND AEROPLANE TRIP ACROSS AMERICA (Received January 15. 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. Jan. 14 Mr. Howard Hughes, a young American millionaire, holder of the worlds speed record for land aeroplanes, broke the transcontinental record to-day. He flew in a Northrop monoplane from Los Angeles to New York non-stop in nine hours 27 minutes 10 seconds, which is 35 minutes 41 seconds less than Turner's previous record established in 1934 • By using an oxygen tank, Mr. Hughes maintained an altitude of 18,000 ft. most of the time. He averaged 260 miles an hour for about 2450 miles and at times reached a speed of 295 miles an hour.
