TO-DAY'S RACING EVENTS

THAMES MEETING OPENING PROGRAMME GOLDFIELDS CUP CONTEST 'TEN USEFUL HORSES ENGAGED REVIEW OF THE PROSPECTS The Thames Jockey Club's mooting will -be opened at Pnrawai to-day, when the chief events will be the Goldfields Cui- and the Flying Handicap. The fields are fairly well balanced and should provido some interesting racing. The course has benefited by receni rain ard conditions promise to bo very favourable. The betting will bo under the win and place system. Following are details of the fields, with a review of the prospects in each

The topyeighfc. Mafeking displayed encouraging form at the summer meeting at Elierslie, improving with each run, to finish second to Valmint on the final dqy. Professional was second to Littlo Artist at Pukekoho in November and has since been working nicely. Madelon has shown some pace and is a likely improver. Brilliant Acre's form this season has not reached expectations, but he is speedy and should be assisted by his ability to begin smartly. There are a number of other possibilities and these include Grand Tonic, Racewhip, Hope Lass and Ihe Vamp. The favourites may be PROFESSIONAL, MAFEKING, BRILLIANT ACRE.

The topweight Clan Ronald has no recent form, but Dark Princess shaped fairly well for about a mile and a-half in. better company at Ellerslie recently. British • Columbia may be all the better for the experience he had at Pukekohe and his speed should take him a long way. King Mestor and Solomon may be a likely pair and Last Lap should be more fit now than when he raced at Te Awamutu. Semi-arch is a good jumper, while Silver Wattle, La Femme Noire, Nigger Rill and Teddy Boy may all have chances. The prime fancies may include DARK PRINCESS, BRITISH COLUMBIA, , LAST LAP. I,IS—TAPU HACK HANDICAP, Of £6O; 7 fur. st. lb. 6t - lb - Solaria . . 910 Racette ... .7 9 Bonnie Song .84 Valrent • . • • 7 o Loombination .SO Gay Egypt • . * 4 King Brierly . 7 11 Grand Tonic . 7 0 Eingshot ... 1 10 The Vamp . . 7 0 Enlightenment 7 9 Dutch Girl ..70 Bonnie Song failed at Ellerslie, but she should be more at home in this company, especially with the sting out of the ground. Loombination was a good third at Te Awamutu just before the holidays, and King Brierly has been working nicely at Te Aroha. Ringshot's second to Tidalia at Ellerslie ■was promising and Racette is very iiseful in .this class. Enlightenment has shown promise on the tracks, but his public form has not reached expectations, although ho has been several times placed. Valrent and bay Egypt are both capable of running good races and Grand Tonic is also a possibility. The best supported may be RINGSHOT, BONNIE SONG, RACETTE. 2,O—GOLDFIELDS CUP, Of £'lso; li miles Bt. lb. lb " Sir Abb ... 9 0 Bonny Gay . . 7 5 Gay Rose 8 5 Day - . 7 8 Master Norvai 8 2 Grand Talk . . 7 2 Miss Lu . . . 8 0 Lagoon . - . . ' - Keith Lu . . . 7 6 zinnia ..70 Recent form suggests an excellent chance for Gay Rose and she will require only to reproduce her Summer Cup effort to make it very difficult for the others. Sir Abb failed in his only start at Ellerslie, but he is in weaker company here and may make a showing. Master Norval has failed twice since winning at Pukekohe in November, but this is a class in which he should go well, especially if the ground is a little easy. Miss Lu should be capable of a good effort and an improver like Keith Lu may prove very dangerous. Bonny Gay is useful an should make a showing, while Day Wind is an improver with a chance. Grand Talk and Lagoon have no recent form, but Lady Zinnia was a winner in the hack class at Stratford, borne who may be in demand are GAY ROSE, KEITH LU, MISS LU.

Kacewhip ... V 0 Winlona has recent winning form and King Brierly has been working nicely. Application is a very speedy eg" ner, whose pace should assist * Gay Egypt .should not be without prospects if reserved, and Lauc a oi.\ may now be nearer good racing c dition than she was when last seen 111 public. Others who may add ,nt ? to the contest are Kacewhip, Made and Hope Lass. The best fancied may be APPLICATION, GAY EGYPT. KING lUUEKLY 3.3O—FLYING HANDICAP, Of Js'100; 6 fur. , „ . at. lb. st. lb. _ 7 7 tucidua .... 9 0 King Ford . . 7 Prince Acre . 8 11 Bellkyrian . 7 / Coronis .... 7 13 Wnlmie Keihi . 7 i Solomon ... 7 11 Puriri lark . ' Tin Lap ... 7 8 Bracket: Solomon and Coronis. The top weight, Lucidns, is capa. e of a solid performance, but with 1 easing of the ground a better piospcc may be Prince Acre, who ran a good face in the Railway Handicap KJlerslio. The latest form of Coronis has not been good, but she is in a class *"here she should have excellent pios Pects if sho repeats her best. Solomon should not be without prospects, While improvers like Tin Lap, Bellkyrian and

Wahine Reihi should all go well, especially a fino beginner like Bellvyrian. Puriri Park is a good galloper, but lias boon off the scene for a long time. Popular fancies may be PRINCE ACRE, BELLKYRIAN, CORONIS. 4.IS—BOROUGH HANDICAP, Of £75; .1 milo st- lb. st. lb. Teddy Boy . . 8 13 Pound Sterling 8 1 Huskio . . . „ 8 12 Ellanui .... 8 0 Seaman .... 8 8 Barograph .80 Jiucette .... 8 5 Mio Lutne ..80 Enlightenment S 5 Ella BunslJy . 8 0 \ alrent .... 8 4 The topweights, Teddy Bov and Huskie, are capable of sound performances in the class, and Seaman displayed considerable promise when he won the Ladies' Bracelet ut Cambridge on Labour Day, running out tho mile and a-quarter in good style. Racette and Enlightenment should botli be equal to racing prominently and Yalrent is another with good prospects. Pound Sterling has shown no form for some time, but he is very useful when at iiis best and it will not be to his disadvantage if the sting is out of the going. The favourites may bo SEAMAN, YALRENT, TEDDY BOY.

Most of the candidates have previous engagements and it is possible that there may be some defections, as it is scarcely likely that many of them will start twice. Bellkyrian and Wahine Reihi should both have chances, but tho open sprint may be preferred for them. Mungacre lias been galloping nicely. Queen Nona is consistent and Application is very speedy. Sing Lee and Sir Tommy have shown winning form. Professional and Gay Egypt are handily placed and may be hard to beat. Investors may show a preference for SING LEE, APPLICATION, QUEEN NONA SCRATCHINGS POSTED SEVERAL WITHDRAWALS Scratchings posted for the first day of the Thames Jockey Club's meeting to-day are as follows: — Maramarua Brush Hurdles.—L'Allegro. Ehvorthy, George Gould and D. E. Wanklyn. Ellis will now be able to fulfil riding engagements at tho Wellington meeting at Trentham next week. One of his mounts will bo Silver Ring in the Wellington Cup.

GAY BRONEY GOES SOUTH The Ellcrslie-trained Gay Broney has been sent to Trentham to keep his engagement in tho Wellington Cup next Wednesday. It is probable that ho may compete at some of the other southern meetings after Trentham and he has been nominated for the chief handicap events at Wanganui. NEW BARRIER TESTED Tho new six-strand barrier at the mile and a-cjuarter post at Trentham was completed on Saturday and was civen a trial at tho week-end.
