FIFTY YEARS AGO
UNEMPLOYED IN CITY The term "unemployed'' gained signi* ficanee long before the recent years of depression. Fifty years ago, a? at other times during the history of the Do* minion, the attention of the Government was drawn to the numbers who could not obtain employment. Governments in the past set so low a wage for the unemployed worker, that he readily accepted any other work that; was offering.
An article published in the New Zkaland Hkkali) of January 16, ISS6, stated:—"The number of unemployed on the defence and other works ' ,IV decreasing by degrees, the men finding they can do better elsewhere than ,vor _ for the Government at 4s '3d a ua>« Men temporarily hard-up are put o"> but on the whole the number so employed has been materially decrease*, which is a proof that the men can nn fresh avenues of labour if they Increased employment has thus wen found for the surplus of labour in city."
