GERMANY AND JEWS
Sir. —In reply to the letter by "K.W.5.," my letter of protest against Germany's treatment of the Jews which appeared in the Herald of October 28 was based on a cablegram published in the Herald of October 24 which read as follows: "Berlin Oct. 23. —The German Ministry of Propaganda has instructed branch offices throughout Germany to expunge the names of Jews killed in the Great War from rolls of honour." "K.W.S." thinks it incredible that I should allow myself to be misled by such deliberate falsifications, and advises me to make sure before accusing. He further says: "The official German dementi is now to hand, denying the issue of the above-men-tioned order." I have not noticed the denial, but am glad if it has been made; but if I am not to believe such straightforward cablegrams as that of October 23, mentioned above, can I believe the news of the German dementi contradicting it? The newspapers continue to publish accounts of further harsh and cruel treatment of the Jews, which have so shocked humanity as to wring from Dr. Henson, Bishop of Durham (among others), the following vehement protest: "This treatment of the Jews does violence to the fundamental conclusions which humanity has reached. We, as co-inheritors with the Germans of the great heritage of civilisation, desire to bring home to them that in the fervour and frenzies of their revolution they have been carried into a position which they can only maintain at the final price of excluding themselves from the fellowship of civilised peoples." And he finishes as follows: "We can make it clear from our hearts that we loathe and detest this attitude which is obtaining in Germany." 231 Parnell Road. J. Thornes.
