FAT STOCK MARKET

PRICES AT WESTFIELD SMALL YARDING OF CATTLE SHEEP AND LAMBS IN DEMAND Heavy pasture growth resulting from recent warm rains was responsible for small yardings of cattle and sheep at the Westfieki fat stock sale yesterday, and, although the quality generally was not outstanding, tho market remained very firm, with a decided improvement in sheep values. Graziers are now compelled to retain their stock to handle one of tho heaviest supplies of feed at this season for many years. Fewer than 600 head of cattle were yarded. The quality of the ox beef offered was hardly up to standard, but a strong demand existed and good lightweight sorts found a ready market, with a top price of 32s per 1001b. for extra choice ox beef. Tho cows and heifers were also of medium quality and sold freely at .rates fully on a par with those ruling last week. The best of the yarding were prime steers from Mr. H. E. Beed, of Waerenga, these selling to £l3 12s 6d.

Easing in Values for Oalves

Calves were offered in full numbers with an unusually good supply of wellfinished vealers. There was a decided easing in values for the first time for several months, heavy and medium vealers suffering most with prices about 10s below those at recent sales. Toward the end of the sale the demand was'decidedly weak. A number of factors combined to make a bright tone in the sheep market. Apart from heavy pasture growth, recent torrential rains made mustering a matter of considerable difficulty. Good prospects for fat lambs and wool also promise to create an exceptionally strong demand for ewes and these were in very short supply. Actually there were a number of buyers operating for ewes for breeding. Bidding was brisk throughout and values made an allround improvement, amounting to as much as 3s in the case of ewes. An average yarding of lambs sold well, with store buyers helping to strengthen the market.

Pigs were again in exceptionally hoavv supply. Bidding was very free for all classes, baconers being very firm at late rates and porkers showing an improving tendency. Stores were in better demand than is usual at this time of the year. Prices per lb. for baconers were quoted at <Ud, and for porkers, 5Jd to ojd. Comparison of Quotations The following is a summary of the prices realised for fat stock for the last two weeks at the Westfield fat stock

Mills, of Hangiriri, and Messrs. Dingle and Son, of Waiotira. A truck from Messrs. Judd Bros., of Bickerstaffe, made to £lO ss, and the offering of Mr. K. D. Orr, of Tuakau, 1 sold to* £lO.
