NEW MAIN HIGHWAYS

ADDITION OF 542 MILES GROWTH IN TWELVE YEARS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Wednesday A list of additional sections of roads to be regarded as main highways, aggregating 542 miles in length, has been approved by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. 1?. Somple, on the recommendation of the Main Highways Board and is published in the Gazette. The recommendations are made annually, in tlie first place by the district highways councils to the board and then by the board to the Minister. There have been cancellations in the main highways category totalling 48 miles of road.

When the hoard commenced operations in 1924 it had just over 1000 miles of highway under its jurisdiction. Main highways in the Dominion today total 12,054 miles. Inclusion in the main highways category means that such roads receive a standard maintenance subsidy of £:i for £l. In the new list this year roads on Stewart Island are included for the first time. .This indicates the increasing popularity of the island as a pleasure resort.
