ELLERSLIE TRAINING
SMART SPRINTS RECORDED FLEETWIND'S SOLID FIVE GAY DEFENCE PLEASES . The weather was fine for training operations at Ellerslio on Saturday, and, with the tracks in excellent order, 1 a good deal of fast work was accomplished. On the No. 2 grass, Palardo sprinted throe furlongs in 38 4-ss. She is developing nicely, but is still a trifle above, herself in condition. The Greyland mare was just in front of Professional at tho end of five furlongs in 1.4 1-5- Both arc working iu encouraging style. Knight of Australia and Tea Chat went away steadily to cover a circuit, taking 1.24 4-5 for the last six furlongs without being fully extended. Red Flame ran five furlongs in 1.5 2-5. Gay Marigold covered tho same distance in similar time. * Tidalia sprinted three furlongs in 395. She bears a very solid appearance and may improve as the season goes on. Whirlmint beat Marlene over half a mile in 51 2-ss. Whirlmint's recent work has been encouraging for a maiden, but Marlene has not done a great deal of fast work. Hunting Maid ran seven furlongs in 1.33 4-5, tho last half-milo in 53 3-ss. The easing of track conditions should bo in her favour. Sir Abb Sprints There was little between Sir Abb and ! Enlightenment over five furlongs in ■*l.4 4-5. This was Sir Abb's first gallop since he competed on the final day of j the summer meeting at Ellerslie. En- j lightenment, who is not a robust horse, is looking better after a period j of easy work. Fleetwind, with tho better of the j weights, was going freely in front of Leo Colossus at the end of five furlongs i in 1.4 2-5. Fleetwind worked tivelyGay Broney and Bingshot ran their last six of seven furlongs in 1.17 2-5, the former finishing lft front. Gay Princess joined in at tho five furlongs and j finished close up to the other pair, the time being 1.5. Gay Broney worked pleasingly on the easy track. Haputale and Courthaven beat Lone Flier over three furlongs in 38 4-ss. Haputale appears to be making some progress. Vera Acre ran three furlongs comfortably in 40s. She is looking well and j may get another turn before long. Rereatu was not extended to run . half a mile in 58 4-ss. He looks none the worse for his exertions at tho sum--1 mer meeting and will be ready to race again at short notice. , Teddy Boy and Bayora Teddy Boy beat Bayora over half a i mile in ois, upon which he could have > improved. t Gay Defence sprinted three furlongs ) in 37 2-ss, the best of the morning, i Gay Defence lias apparently done some t exercise away from the tracks, as he - looks bright and well. ? Valspear was going nicely alongside , Master Vaals at tho end of three furlongs in 38s. Valspear should be ready for°a good effort in public whenever required, . . 1 Free Advice went easily over six fur--1 lones in 1.26 4-5. United and Gemland 1 ran three furlongs in 40s. ' • Persian Lady was going better than Solas at the end of five furlongs in 1.(3. Persian Lady is working well, but has not raced up to form this season. 5 With Lorita to assist over the last : five, Dutch Girl and Hope Lass covered six furlongs in 1.17 4-5. Dutch Girl I finished in front and her displav was the best she has given so far. She has evidently derived benefit from lier first race at'Ellerslie. sprinted three' furlongs iri 40 3-ss. King Mestor (Baker) was schooled over four hurdles. He hit the second, but otherwise his showing was good. He afterward covered a round in 1.50. Te Kapia (Fergus) jumped a couple of hurdles carefully and then ran six furlongs in 1.24. He is making steady progress. GOOD HORSES TO REST JONATHAN AND GAI LIO Mrs. S. L. Parsons' good horses Jonathan and Gallio are to bo rested and they will not be called upon to do any further racing until next season. Jonathan felt the effects of his three races at tho summer meeting at Ellerslie, where he registered a brilliant win in the Railway Handicap and then in his next two starts failed to display his very best, although he made a very creditable showing in the Clifford Plate, which was decisively won by Cuddle. 1 As a result of the injury he sustained about fifteen months ago, Jonathan now has to bo very carefully handled and A. Cook deserves credit for having brought him back to winning form. Following liis victory in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, Gallio ricked himself slightly and in view of the fact that he has had some fairly hard races it has been deemed advisable to put him by for the time being. Up to the present Gallio lias started six timos, for three firsts, two' seconds and a third, so that his form has been very consistent. Gallio's winnings total £9lO and he has proved a cheap purchase at tho 250 guineas he cost as a yearling.
