SUCCESS FOR jr. McCARTEN MISS NOTTAVA'S VICTORY LIMBOHM FINISHES SECOND fßeceivpd January 12, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 12 The former New Zealand jockey M. McCarten has regained his old form and lias been riding with conspicuous success recently, his run of victories oil two-year-olds being remarkable. Ho rode two winners, including Blackbird in the first division of the Nursery Handicap, at, the Canterbury Park races yesterday. By winning tho Canterbury Handicap from Liinbohm, the Now Zealandbred maro A!iss Nottava scored her first success since the was galloped on and had a tendon of tho hind leg severed while racing at Randwick on April 27. It was feared at tho time that Miss Nottava's racing days were over, but she made a remarkably good recovery. Limbohm's performance was particularly creditable, as ho was left at the post, losing nearly half a furlong. Tho Auckland-owned colt Raepata, who carries the colours of Mr. E. Montgomery, was third in tho first division of tho Nursery Handicap, wherein Prospective was unplaced. Clara Butt, Bed Rosebud and Hands Up were unplaced in divisions of the Maiden Welter Handicap. Headmaster and Dual Ratio were unplaced in the Flying Welter. The Palmist was second in the second division of the Nursery Handicap. Cockpen filled a similar position in the Campsie Handicap. .Results:— CANTERBURY HANDICAP, Of £200; 1 mile <S fur. MISS NOTTAVA (New Zealand-bred). G. N. HAWERA TRACK WORK SILVER WINGS GOES FAST [FIIOM OLH OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAWERA, Saturday Several Trentham candidates were i galloped at Hawera on Saturday morning, all being sent on tho trial grass, which was fairly fast. Notium showed his usual speed to finish in front of Shemsek over three furlongs in 35is. Notium looks in fine fettle for his Wellington Stakes engagement. The Wellington Cup candidate Lowenberg, accompanied by Knockout, worked solidly over a round and thon ran half-a-mile in 60s. Lowenberg finished about four lengths in front and was going comfortably. He should be much better suited by the left-handed Trentham track than ho was on the right-handed course at Ellerslie. Brilliancy ran away from Clembroney over half-a-mile in 52 2-ss. The time was only moderate, but Brilliancy could have done much better. The racing ho had at Ellerslie seems to have brought him on considerably. ■ Aga Khan was five lengths ahead of Seamond at the close of six furlongs in 1.18 2-ss. Aga Khan went particularly well and looks a good prospect for the Ashhurst Cup. Seamond is to contest the high-weight events at Trentham. Tho host gallop of tho morning was recorded by Silver Wings, who ran half-a-mile in 495, a first-class effort. She is much improved.
