HALLOWE'EN PARTIES

PAPATOETOE AND DEVONPORT

At atmosphere typical of tint traditional Hallowe'en ceremonial was presented in tlie St. John's Presbyterian Church Hall, 'Papatoctoo, on Thursday night. The liall was decorated with figures of black cats, witches and owls, and drapings suitable for the occasion. These were revealed in the flickering lights east by witches' fires and illuminated pumpkins. The complete effect was of some eerie cavern peopled by discernible guests. An entertaining programme, including shadow pictures, sketches and a host of games and pastimes suited to the function, was presented. Alter supper the evening was continued with (rallies and items. The function was organised in aid of the " J)usy Bee funds by Mrs. Hunter and Miss Lulu Hunter, assisted by the Misses McComb, Knight, Roseveare and "Wilson, and Messrs. McNaughton, Dawson, J. Swaffield, M. Roseveare and W. McComb. A Hallowe'en party was given by the Waiteinata Rangers in the Parish Hall, Dcvonport. About 40 rangers and guides were present and competitions provided excellent entertainment. Opportunity was taken to present the Mabbott Cup to the Mataroa, company. The trophy was presented by Mrs. Thompson, district commissioner, and received on behall of Mataroa by Miss (J ilniore. Competitions were won by Miss JJurgin, Miss Persival and Miss Gilmore. A feature of the evening was the "Ghost Story," which was cleverly enacted by Miss Mawhiney. Among those present were: —Mrs. Thompson, Waiteinata district cornmissioner, Miss Murgin, head of training, Miss Roberton, head of Auckland ({angers, and representatives from Awhina, Tautawhi, Mataroa and Tuaiiine ranger companies, also Takapuna, Dcvonport and North Shore guide companies.
