FUNCTION IN WELLINGTON THIRTY-ONE DEBUTANTES fBV telegraph—own correspondent] WELLINGTON. Friday Thirty-one debutantes from as far south as Ashburton and as far north as Napier were presented to the Governor-General, \ iscount Galwav, and Viscountess Gahvay, at a ball held at Government House, Wellington, last night. The occasion was one of great brilliancy, the many beautiful frocks and vivid uniforms showing up to advantage in tho large white and gold ballroom, with its handsome red and gold brocade draping at;d its many gilt chairs that line the walls. Between 600 and 700 were present, and the sitting-out rooms were filled with a happy throng of young people. Major A. Purvis, military secretary to the Governor-General, Captain A. He her Percy, A.D.C., and Lieutenant Sir Standish Roche, A.D.C., U.N., were untiring in their efforts in the interests of the guests. At eight o'clock the debutantes assembled in the drawingroom and here the presentation took place. Lord and Ladv Gahvay standing at one end of the room. Major Purvis announced each debutante and the lady presenting her. Their Excellencies shook hands with each one.
Lady Galway was an exquisite figure in a lovely frock of gold lame closely brocaded in salmon pink. She also wore a tiara and a pendant necklace of diamonds.
