GANG WARFARE
MORE DEATHS RESULT MURDERS IN NEW JERSEY (Received October 25. 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. Oct. 24 The murder of Louis Amberg in Brooklyn yesterday seems to have been a signal for a wild outburst of gang shootings. Late in the evening Arthur Flegenheimer, known as "Dutch Schultz," a notorious gang leader, was attacked by rival gangsters while he was sitting with three companions in a tavern at Newark, New Jersey. Schultz and his companions fell seriously wounded under a hail of machinegun and shotgun bullets. The police, both in New York and New Jersey, •frantically tried to run down the gunmen. Martin Krompier, who was closely associated with Schultz in many criminal enterprises, and a companion were shot and seriously wounded in a barber's shop in the Times Square section of New York City. The police theory for these two attacks is that, since the acquittal on a charge of evasion of income-tax Schultz had attempted to reassert his authority in the New York underworld, which his rivals decided to stop by murdering him. Later Schultz died in the Newark Hospital. Ho was a Roman Catholic and the last rites were administered before ho expired. Two of his tavern companions also died and the two who were shot in the Times Square district aro in a very grave condition. The police anticipate that there will be even more intense gang warfare owing to Schultz's death. They say a newly-organised gang with four well known figures in the underworld as leaders have o|«?ned a ruthless campaign to annihilate both the Schultz and the Amberg gangs and seize their lucrative "rackets." Schultz became a millionaire at the ago of 31 by the manufacture of beer during the prohibition era. The police listened to what he said in his delirium, obtaining information which they were never able to obtain from him while he was conscious. Schultz continually babbled the names "Unione Siciliano," which are those of a notorious Sicilian gang, also the name "Luciano," who is ono of his companions.
