RAIN IN CANTERBURY
FEARS FOR CROPS ALLAYED COUNTRYSIDE REFRESHED [BY TELECUAPII —PRESS ASSOCIATION i TIMARU, Friday Fears of the farmers of South Canterbury that a prolonged dry spell would have disastrous consequences have been dispelled as a result of the beneficial rain of the last three days. Up until early in the week, crop* throughout the district appeared to be all right, but were stunted in growth, and the general opinion of farmers was that a fall of 2in. was necessary to enable them to face the summer with any degree of confidence. A change came on Wednesday and south-easterly weather has prevailed for three days. There have been occasional breaks, but generally light penetrating rain has prevailed and the countryside is already looking much better. Bain is still falling.
The total fall this year so tar is 10.0 in., compared with 24.Sin. in the corresponding period of last year. DOWNPOUR IN WAIKATO EXCKLLKNT GROWTH FOLLOWS [I'KO.M OUIt OWN CO It KEB PON I) KN T J HAMILTON, Friday A liberal downpour of rain has occurred in the Waikato during the last three days, and has been of inestimable benefit to farmers throughout the district in refreshing the pastures and stimulating growth. The rainfall Hamilton for the three days ended a a.m. to-day was 2.30 in., bringing the rainfall for the month up to 4.3/ in Waikato Uiver has risen 2ft. m Hamilton since the break in tne weather on Sunday. The weather wan line to-day.
