CRUELTY TO HORSE
PROSECUTION IN COURT TWO YOUNG MEN FINED "The evidence indicates that this is ,& really bad case of cruelty," said SubInspector Fox in the Police Court yesterday, when two young men, Alfred Henry Sergeant and Frederick Victor Sergeant,' appeared on summons, charged with cruelty to a horse. Evidence was given by Constable Boag, of New Lynn, that on September 15 he saw a motor-van, in which were defendants, proceeding along Great North Road. A horse, to which a ropo was attached, was being "towed" by tho vehicle. The animal was in a very distressed condition. Witness said he called out, but the ran did not stop, and he followed the vehicle in a motor-car, overtaking it about three-quarters of a mile along the road. The animal had no shoes. The van had been travelling at over ten miles an hour, and the horse was idecidedly lame. Pleading not guilty, defendants said the van was not travelling at a greater ppeed than about five miles an hour. The horse had a twisted fetlock, and it had been considered more humane to lead tho animal than to ride it. Tho Magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt: ■You wero too lazy to ride the horse. Jt was a caso of cruelty., there is no doubt about that. Both defendants were fined £2 and costs.
