NEW FIRE ENGINE
THE AUCKLAND BRIGADE PARTLY LOCAL MANUFACTURE On the recommendation of the superintendent, Mr W. L. Wilson, the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board decided yesterday to purchase a new fire engine costing £853. Tlie chassis will be of Canadian manufacture, but the body and the pump with which it will be fitted will be built in Auckland. The superintendent said he had carried out exhaustive tests with various machines, but tho make he had chosen had proved to bo the most suitable. It had come up to all tho board's specifications, including a speed of 30 miles an hour on a grade of one in 12. The machine would be fitted with a pump having a capacity of 400 gallons a minute. Tho chairman, Mr. J. J. Kingston, said it had been stated that tho particular make of machine chosen would not stand up to the work. Mr. Wilson, however, had found that it would fulfil all requirements. Tho superintendent explained that tho average distance a machino was required to travel in the course of a year was only about 300 miles. There were over 20 machines similar to. the one he had chosen in service in different parts of the Dominion, and they were all reported to be giving satisfaction. The chairman said that all the new machines in London wore closed in to protect the men from the weather. Ho hadj discussed this aspect with the superintendent, and they had agreed that machines of that type were not necessary in Auckland, Tho weather was not sufficiently cold here. It was not like the weathor in Dunedin or Invercargill. It is anticipated that the new machine will 1)0 delivered in about three months 1 time.
