TEMPERANCE WORK
Devonport.—A meeting of the Devonport Women's Christian Temperance Union was held on Wednesday, when Mrs. Williams presided over a good attendance of members. A vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mrs. McCombs. Arrangements were made for members to be on duty at the W.C.T.U. stall at the Winter Show. Mrs. Brewer was appointed to represent the union on the Devonport Welfare League. A special feature was made of White Ribbon day. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Burnett and Blackwood. Sylvan Avenue.—A meeting of the Sylvan Avenue branch was held at the Friends' meeting house. Miss Pudney presided. Miss Jackson gave the temperance fact. Mrs. Egerton Gill read extracts from the international journal of the National Council of Women. A unanimous resolution was passed deprecating the continuance of flogging for certain crimes, and pointing out that medical attention should be available. Arrangements were made for attendance at the Winter Show stall. Afternoon tea brought the meeting to a close.
