SCOTSMAN KILLED IN CHINA
Walking into a hail of bullets between steel-jacketed police and an armed robber, Air. Nathaniel Gilston Mac Donald, aged 33, a native of Kingussie, Invcrness-shire, was accidentally shot dead in Shanghai. His death was the climax to a desperate chase through the streets of Shanghai of a man seen leaving a burgled house. The burglar, whose two companions succeeded in escaping, commandeered a taxicab at the point of the pistol. He drove off. pursued by police wearing steel jackets, who riddled the cab with bullets. One of their shots punctured a tyre, causing the taxicab to skid and crash on the pavement. The robber fled on foot toward the Hong-
kew market, closely followed by the police. Mr. Mac Donald, an engineer employed by a Shanghai firm, was on his way to the office when he walked into the barrage i)f bullets. On* bullet struck him in the head and another in the heart. He died almost immediately. The burglar was shot dead by the police in the market. A Chinese policeman and a Chinese bystandor were also injured by the flying bullets.
