TOWN HALL RECEPTION

THE JAPANESE VISITORS MAYOR AND COUNCILLORS , ADMIRAL'S APPRECIATION The last of the functions to bo held in connection with tho visit to Auckland of the Japanese Training Squadron took place last evening, when RearAdmiral K. Nakamura v Prince H. Fushiyu, Prince T. Asaka, Commander Kimozawa, a number of officers and about 20 cadets were the guests of the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, and the city councillors atj an At Home in the Town Hall. To meet them was a very large gathering of Auckland citizens who also were the guests of the Mayor and councillors. The hall had been beautifully decorated for the occasion and lit with a multitude of deep goldencoloured electric, lights, which threw a mellow glow over the gathering. From the threo central electroliers, which had been screened with lycopodium, ropes of tho same feathery creeper had been carried with a light canopy effect to tho walls and also looped in front,of the gallery railings. Tall palms had been placed nt intervals above the loops breaking tho monotony of the long level lino of tho railing and inset among the greenness of the foliage wero green and gold fairy lights. A Graceful Compliment A special feature of the decorative scheme was the arrangement of the stage, which, out of compliment to tho visitors, had been massed with tall groups of golden and bronze chrysanthemums, which surely must have reminded them of their own home country. For this special purpose they had been cherished and carefully shielded from tho winter blasts ' of the last few days. Bamboo and foliage plants formed a soft and monious background to their lovely colouring and below them the floor of the stage had been carpeted with green. A deep border of massed chrysanthemums, laculia and other flowers, intermingled with foliage plants, fronted the stage, the general effect being beautiful. Shortly after nine o'clock the principal guests of tho evening with Commodore the Hon. E. R. Drummond and a number of naval officers from the New Zealand warships in port arrived and were met by the Mayor and party and escorted into the hall, where they were presented to the Mayoress, Mrs. Ernest Davis. Several Auckland citizens and their wives were later presented to them. The Mayoress was wearing a frock of black souple satin with diamante trimming and coat of green and silver shot lame with green ostrich feather trimming. " An Enjoyable Stay A brief musical programme was given, Mrs. Harold King singing some Maori songs and Mr. Fagen also singing. The National Anthems, British and Japanese, were also played, and supper concluded the evening.
