THE HIKURANGI SWAMP
DRAINAGE. WORK STOPPED ACTION .BY DEPARTMENT [fbom ottb own cobbespondent] "WHANGAREI, Thursday No work has been' done for soma weeks in connection with the draining of the Hikurangi swamp and an official of the Lands and Survey Department at its office at Apotu stated yesterday that nothing further would be undertaken. No reason was given for this decision. • The men previously engaged on the drainage work have been dismissed. The majority were engaged under the No. o scheme. -The engineer in eharge of the works, Mr. C. V. Bosselman, will be leaving shortly on transfer. This" Main Highways Board has recently cleared, willows between Apotu ami Waiotu and this has allowed more water to flow at a greater rate. The machinery used for the drainago is still on the location, much of it being stored at Apotu.
