NOTES ON THE RACING

KAHAPA'S FIRST SUCCESS FULL-BROTHER TO TE KARA CHANG SCORES IN HURDLES I BY ARCHER The first division of the Maiden Handicap was won in very convincing fashion by the moderatelyfancied Kahapa, who returned double figures on the win machine. The inside horses Sweet Hose and Kahapa were the smartest to begin, and they led early from Hunting Maid, Taniwharau and Little .Artist. Kahapa drew just ahead of Sweet Rose at the top and was joined near the turn by Wahineroa, who had run up fast. Wahineroa was first into the straight from Kahapa, Sweet Rose, Little Artist and Sir Tommy. Once in line for the post Kahapa asserted himself and went away to win easily by two lengths from Master Rex," who defeated Little Artist by a neck. Hunting Maid was almost in line fourth, followed by Lilbert, Taniwharau and Sweet Ros<j. Kahapa is owned and trnined by Mr. M, H. Tims, of Te Awamutu, and is a fullbrother to his owner's erstwhile good stayer To Kara. Like his relative, he has plenty of size and is a good type. Kahapa made short work of the opposition at the finish, giving nothing a chance in the last furlong. The Hurdles Contest

Having his first start for over 12 months. Chang effected a surprise in the Te Kuiti Handles. winning well and returning double figures for a win. Ganput and King Win were quickest over the first fence, Ganpat being joined in the lead by Lucidus as thty raced up the straight. Lucidus ran down the fence in front of the stand and, hitting hard, lost his rider. Ganpat was then left in front from King Win and Chang, with Chile. Verden and Master Musk in the rear division and Sub-Editor, who was soon afterwards pulled up, tailed right off.

Ganpat was just in front turning along the back from Chang and King Win, with Emancipation, Mangu King and Stanchion almost together next, and then Biforna, Chile and Master Musk well back. Chang joined Ganpat in front near the sis furlongs and they were out six lengths at the top from King Win nnd Mangu King, who were followed by Emancipation and Stanchion, with Chile. Biform and Master Musk moving up. Chang was first into the straight from Ganpat, with King Win. Master Musk (outside), Travelling Agent, Biform and Chile all handy. Chang led over the last fence and went on to win by two lengths from Chile, with Master Musk three-parts of a length away third and Biform foiirth. Next to finish were Travelling Agent. King Win, Stanchion, Emancipation and Ganpat. Chang once again demonstrated his partiality for heavy going and registered a fine performance after his long _ absence _ from racing. He was always galloping and jumping well and never looked like being beaten in the straight. Chile and Master Musk were both staying on soundly at the finish after being in rearward positions most of the way Three-Year-Old Winner The three-year-old Calahot was the third successive' winner to return double figures on the straight-out machine when he scored '"n the second division of the Maiden Handicap. Full of Scotch and Sweet Lap found their feet quickest, but at the end of a furlong Gloucester and Calshot were in front from Trouvaille. Sweet_ Lap, SpeaTcourt. Flit Acre and Rex Victor. > Calshot •unct Gloucester showed the way into the straight to Trouvaille, Sweet Lap, Spearcourt nnd Flit Acre. Caishot drew out at the distance and went on to score by two and a-half lengths from Sweet Lap. who just outstayed Gloucester to beat him by a head for second. Trouvaille was fourth, with an interval of about six lengths to Spearcourt, who was followed by Worthy King. Rex Victor, Flit Acre and Nicodemus. The first end third horaes are both trained by «1. F. Tutchen and are littleraced three-year-olds by Acre. They showed plenty of sp ed and Calshot stayed the better when the pressure was applied, always being a winner over the last furlong. The each-way favourite Gay Rosa made a fine attempt to win the President's Handicap, but, after leading into the straight, she was beaten into third place. A good start was made, Sinking Fund reaching the front quickly from Mercian Prince. Gay Lap, Mungatoon and Gay Rose. Gay Lap assumed the lead from Sinking Fund along the back, where Mercian Prince was next, with King Mu3k well back. Gay Lap and Sinking Fund ware the leaders at the top from Gay Rose, King Rey and Bonny Gay, with King Musk moving up. Gay Rose took charge nearmg the turn nnd led into the straight from Gay Lap, King Rey. Bonny Gay and King Musk. King Rey overhauled Gay Rose near the distance and stayed on to score by « length from King Musk, who finished strongly to defent Gay Rose by a neck. Gay Lap was a good fourth, succeeded by First Lap. Bonny Gay, Delrain and Mercian Prince.

King Rey was handily placed most of the way and ran on well when asked a question jn the straight. King Musk also finished strongly on the outside. He was not well placed early, but had run up handy on the outside at the home turn. Gay Rose may have done better if her effort had been delayed a little longer. Riotous Loses Rider

The each-way favourite Riotous unseated bis rider at the sodwall just before completing the first round of the King Countrj Steeplechase, which was won by the moderately-fancied Solanio. Riotous jumped to the front at the second fence, but there were several changes in the lead before Solanio assumed control near the end of the first round. Solanio, Claremore, Valpeen and London were almost abreast in the lead at the double and Ruby Meteor was next. London lost some lengths turning along the back, where he slipped and almost fell. The field bunched closely at the fivefurlongs and it was anybody's race at this stage, with barely six lengths between first and last. Solanio drew out slightly from Claremore near the half-mile and Royal Limond moved up. Solanio was first over the sodwall into the straight from Free Air. Royal Limond, London and Claremore, who unseated his rider at this fence. Solanio was allowed to ease up when appearing a comfortable winner after crossing the last fence and he had to be shaken up near the end to gain the verdict by half a length from Royal Limond. who responded well to D. O'Connor's vigorous riding. Free Air was six lengths away third and London was fourth, followed by Yalpeen. Ruby Meteor and Billy Boy, with Magic Land a long way back.

Solanio's winning margin would have been much greater if his rider had kept him going in the run from the last fence. He is thoroughly fit and should win more money if he remains sound. Royal Lfmond shaped like a stayer, but he still requires plenty of urging into his fences, as he is inclined to slow up going into them. Free Air made a creditable showing, although she did not jump several fences well. London would have been closer only for losing his position along the back, j Three outsiders filled the places in the Otorohanga Hack Handicap, the winner. Prince Acre paying over a Bcore and a-hnlf on the win machine and double-figures for n place. Landlubber reached the lead quickly and was joined by Prince Acre at the turn, where High Tea, Roman Mascot. Whirling and Royal Dance were all handy. Prince Acre finished on strongly and won by half a length Irom Roman Mascot, who defeated High Tea by a neck. Landlubber was a close fourth, succeeded by Orac, Royal Dance. Gay Egypt and Adalene. Prince Acre's bit broke during the race and he had to be led back to the enclosure. Fine Finish in Sprint The Stewards' Handicap provided a fine finish, Orapai just winning, while the each•way favouritp Gay Seton was fourth. Bougual and Gipsy Moth were soon in the lead and they mnde play to the turn, where they were joined by Gay Seton, who went up on the rails, and Scotland, with Hampton Park and Orapai also handy. Gay Sefon led at the distance, but Orapai was in front near the post and stalled off a determined challenge from Tradesman to win by a head. Gipsy Moth was a neck away third and Gay Seton was almost in line fourth. Next to finish were Hampton Park, Scotland, Leo Colossus and L'Allcgro. It was a splendid race between the first four. Orapai claimed a slb. apprentice's allowance and was nicely handled by R. W. Savage, a very promising young rider. Tiadesman did not jump out cleanly and wa3 a long way back in the early stages. 'There was another exciting finish in the Rangitoto Hack Handicap and Tybalt scored narrowly, being the shortest-priced winner of the day. Instalment showed out first and was joined in the first couple of furlongs by Ford Acre and Tybalt, with Keith Lu and Green Patch n"Xt. Instalment showed the way across I,lie top to Tybalt, and Holly Lu ran up third at. this stage. Instalment made play into the straight from Tybalt, Holly Lu, Keith Lu, Grand Talk and Green Patch. In a hard finish Tybalt got home by half a length from Green Patch, with Arawa Rose a similar distance away third. Holly Lu was fourth, followed by Keith Lu and Instalment. Tybalt registered a solid performance, but Arawa Roie w»« unlucky.
