FIFTY YEARS AGO
A "HARBOUR BRIDGE It is probably not generally realised that the construction of a harbour bridge in Auckland was advocated as long as 50 years ago. Following b an extract' from the New Zealand Herald of May 25, 1885, dealing with th« proposals:— " The subject of the Waitomata Bridge "is again being brought into notice, and no doubt will receive attention for two reasons—first, thsit the position is the nearest on the direct line of the trunk road through the province; secondly, the high cliff front of 100 ft. above the level of the deep channel needs but one span to allow of the largest shipping to pass without interruption to traffic, leaving tlie remainder of the distance to reach Ponsonbv by way of the Watchman as a permanent road across shoal water. The sooner the bridge question is settled, the better. The exact position would be best decided by a commission receiving information —first, by competitive plans, and, secondly, by taking evidence. Should it be decided that the Government is to carry out the work, the waste lands vvould more than repay the outlay, if by a joint stock company, it would present a profitable result." ' fc
