BUILDING IN SYDNEY

LARGE WORKS PENDING INTERESTS IN LONDON _ ( _ SEQUEL TO STATE ELECTIONS Several leading firms of Sydney archi. tects stated on May 13—immediately after the New South Wales elections—that they had received definite instructions to proceed with the preparation of working drawings for a number of city and other buildings. Preliminary instructions had been given for sonie of these works a few months ago, but there was dilatoriness in giving permission to the architects to proceed to/the tender and contract stages. One architect, who got instruction!, on the Monday morning to proceed ai-/• once with the erection of a. city construction and a big addition to a factory building in an adjoining industrial suburb, says the Sydney Morning Herald, stated that neither job would have been proceeded with if the political position had not been clarified. Another architect, whose firm does' considerable work for London boards which have a big financial interest in Sydney and in New South Wales generally, said that the information regard- -= ing the State elections had been sent to headquarters in London by Sydney agents, and London-boards had iitated that development schemes in New ,South Wales would now be proceeded with as rapidly as possible. Taking the aggregate of the schemes put in hand on May 13 and others contemplated, which will be proceeded with at an early date, there will be at least £1,000,000 new money available for expenditure in the building and allied industries within the next six months. It will take at least three months lo get some of the important new works to the contract stage, because cable communications will have to be held with London headquarters of the firmn concerned. It is expected that London representatives of certain firms will be sent to Sydney to consult with local agents regarding developments.
