PLUNKET SOCIETY

WORK IN AUCKLAND FURTHER SUPPORT NEEDED THE ELECTION OF OFFICERS The work of tlio Plunket Society in Auckland during the past year was reviewed at the annual meeting yesterday afternoon. The chairman of the advisory board, Mr. J. H. Frater, prosided over r large attendance of members.

"The results achieved during the past year are very satisfactory in many respects," said the chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report, previously published in tho Herald. "We have an exacting duty tp perform for the benefit of the community, present and future, and this is brought home forcibly when one realises that over 75 per cent of the babies born in and around Auckland come under the care of our Plunket nurses." To carry out the society's work adequate funds were essential, and in this respect it was regrettable that, far from being able to increase activities, the society had actually gone back somewhat financially, said tho chairman. Tho position was not yet serious, but in order to continue the society's work at its present standard revenue must be increased, while, to expand under the pressure of increased population the society's funds would need to be largely augmented. Mr. Frater paid a tribute to the support of the late Miss M. T. Horton over a number of years and to her bequest of £IOO to the society's funds. The gift would bo held by'the society as the "M. T. Horton Bequest." In seconding the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Dr. T. H. Pettit. speaking on behalf of Dr. 11. Tracy-Inglis, chairman of the honorary medical staff, reported that regular staff meetings had been held. A series of lectures given by members to Plunket nurses had proved very successful.

In recognition of the services of Mrs. B. Clayton, formerly Miss Eileen Partridge, the meeting decided to appoint her an honorary life member. Only two other members, Mrs. R. Coleman and Mrs. W. H. Parkes, have had this honour conferred on them. As the outcome of a recommendation from the general conference, it was decided to change the name of the Karitane Hospital to the Truby King Karitane Hospital, in order to associate the name of the founder more definitely with the service. Nearly 1000 entries had been received for the society's photographic competition, it was reported by Mrs. Allan. The exhibition of entries would be officially opened at Milne and Choyce's bv the Mayoress, Mrs. Ernest Davis, on May 31, at 2.30 p.m. Votes of thanks to supporters concluded the meeting.
