CATHOLIC WOMEN
MONTHLY AT HOME There was a large gathering of members and visitors at the monthly At Home held by the Catholic Women's League last evening. The rooms were decorated with large bowls of chrysanthemums, dahlias and autumn foliage. The guests were received by the president. Mrs. M. Tilling. The secretary read the report of the last month's activities. These included the annual pantry appeal for the Catholic orphanages for which donations and goods came from individual members, city, suburban and country parishes, and league branches and sections. Included in these welcome gifts were clothes from Tauranga, Te Puko and Waiuku, and kumaras from the Maori Circle at Matata. As the result of the appeal and orphanage box collection, the sum of £3O is to be forwarded to the orphanage manager, Archdeacon Holbrook. The sewing circle reported much activity in making and reconditioning goods, and the efforts of Misses Reardon and Lloyd in organising a very successful party for sewing circle funds was mentioned. The welfare circle reported the distribution of 248 garments to poor and needy cases, indigent Maoris, unemployed, St. Vincent da Paul, St. Luke's Guild, Catholic institutions, etc. Donors of garments were thanked and an appeal made for clothing of all kinds. The group system of raising funds for league needs and charities has aroused much enthusiasm among members, and many small social functions were announced. The co-operation of all members waa solicited in the coming street collection for the funds of the Community Sunshine and Protection of Women and Children Societies. Some impressions of a visit to Italy, including a description of the national life, scenery, and the beautiful Italian churches, were given by the Rev. Father P. McKeefry, who illustrated his address with many interesting lantern slides. An enjoyable programme was contributed to by Miss N. Griffin and Miss Edna Smith, who gave a pianoforte duet; Miss Betty Todd, who recited; and Mr. V. Mulgan, who sang.
