TOURISTS IN PACIFIC
INCREASING NUMBERS VISITORS FROM AMERICA [from our own correspondent] SUVA, May 8 When Mr. H. H. Sterling, chairman of the New Zealand Tourist Advisory Board, passed through Suva on the Niagara last week he was interested to learn from local tourist officials that the tourist traffic through Suva had shown a marked increase this .vear. Figures compiled locally show that for the first four months ended April 30 a total of 2929 people had passed through the port, compared with 1918 for the same period last year. Of this total 1229 were travelling either to Australia or New Zealand, against a total of 784 for the same period in the previous year. The increase appears to be largely from America, and local shopkeepers report that the spending power of the travellers had noticeably improved. Mr. Sterling stated that he was firmly of opinion that the Pacific countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii, should combine to attract American tourists to the Pacific tour, which offered visitors such a wonderful variety of travel interest It is Mr. Sterling's hope that at soiup date in the near future a conference of the tourist representatives of these countries would be held to consider ways and means of stimulating this trade.
