TEACHERS' CONFERENCE
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE GATHERING IN WELLINGTON [BT TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] "WELLINGTON, Monday The annual conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute was opened to-day by the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop. The Minister of Education, the Hon. S. G. Smith, was unable to be present, but he will probably address delegates later in the week. Mr. N. T. Lambourne, Director of Education, said some of the things urged a year ago had been given effect to. The method of grading had been improved, and an alteration had been made in the payment of annual increments, making the position fairer to all than under the old system. Referring to his going abroad, Mr. Lambourne said there were many matters that he wanted to study at first hand The training of teachers, vocational guidance, rural education and many other subjects had come to the fore in recent years. He hoped to gain knowledge about these things that would be of advantage to both teachers and pupils. An address was delivered by Professor G. W. von Zedlitz on the effect of the repression of basic hate or the aggressive impulse of the child. He advocated a new philisophy that would guide and control impulse without repressing it.
