LONG FIGHT WITH FIRE
OUTBREAKS ON STEAMER BUNKERS OF THE KIA ORA [from our own correspondent] LONDON. Dec. 29 Workmen landed at Sheerness last Saturday after fighting for almost a week a fire which broke out in the bunkers of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's cargo ship Kia Ora, while she was lying idle four miles out in the Thames Estuary. There were about 500 tons of fine coal on the vessel, which had been anchored in the estuary since the summer. Only a small maintenance crew and watchmen had. been kept on board, and when the fire was discovered, 20 men were sent to deal with the" outbreak, which was endangering the ship. The bunkers were emptied and the coal spread about the decks and saturated with water. It was found that the heat from the burning coal had melted some leaden pipes on the lower deck. This was the total extent of the damage.
