RESTRICTION SEQUEL
BLOW TO SHIPOWNERS MUCH SPACE CANCELLED OTHER CARGO DOUBTFUL By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright (Received January 11, 11.5 p.m.) • . SYDNEY. Jan. 11 The serious effect of the restriction of exports to Britain of beef, mutton and lamb upon the shipping industry was emphasised by the Overseas Shipping Representatives' Association to-day. It was stated that within 24 hours bookings of more than 300,000 carcases of mutton and lamb had been cancelled, and that already 12 vessels are affected in Sydney and 14 in Melbourne.
The loss of freight is estimated in Melbourne at £60,000 and there is little hope of filling the cancelled space with other cargo. Shipowners complain bitterly that they were not consulted about the restrictions. Further they point out that they lost heavily last year when tho wool sales were suddenly cancelled and 150,000 bales were withdrawn. Several reductions in freights also have been made in recent months, entirely in the interests cf the Australian export trade, the shipowners declare.
