SUCCESS OF FAVOURITES

WINNERS AT THAMES FOUR FIRST FANCIES MONANUI SCORES IN CUP BEST DIVIDEND BY MUSTANG The success of well-fancied horses was a feature of the opening of the Thames Joel iey Club's annual meeting at Parawai yesterday. The winners comprised four first win favourites, two second favourites and two third favourites, with the result that dividends generally were small.. Tlio largest price was that of Mustang for third in the Pipiroa - Handicap, this horse being eleventh place favourite in the field of 14. There were numerous scratchings, and in throe races there were sufficient runners for only two dividends, while in the last race the field was reduced to four starters, with one dividend. The weather was fine and hot and the track was fast, good times being recorded in consequence. The attendance was estimated at nearly 3000, slightly more than last year, and the totalisator turnover showed a correspondingly small improvement. Investments amounted to £8632 10s, compared with £8493 10a on the first dav last Tear, an increase of £139. Results: — TAPU HANDICAP, Of £55 and sweepstake of £1 each; 6 fur. 34 —WAHTXE REIHI, T. NOTES ON THE RACING SUCCESS OF WAHINE REIHI DON'T LAP WINS HIGH-WEIGHT LIA FAIL BEATS KING FORD BY ARCHER The top-weight Mazir was favourite) for tho Tapu Handicap, but the best he could do was to finish third. Trackman, Wahine Reiki, Sir Abb and Gay Athlone were smartest to begin, Wahine Reihi running to tho front quickly to lead along tho back from Trackman, Gay Athlone and Sir Abb, with Mazir going up fast on the outside. Wahine Reiki led into the straight from Trackman, Gay Athlone and Mazir, who were abreast ahead of Sir Abb. Wahine Reiki ran on strongly to the finish to scoro by two and a-half lengths from Sir Abb, who cut Mazir out of second by a nose. Trackman was a fair fourth, followed by Alignment, Air Lassio gnd Winlona. One© she reached tho front Wahine Reihi was always going like a winner and she was rot seriously troubled in the straight. Sir Abb was staying on solidly at the finish and lie will probably do better over longer distances. Mazir, who did not'jump away well, displayed speed in the middle stages, only to weaken near the end. The race should do him a good denl of good. Trackman made a fair showing and Alignment, running on at the finish, is a likely improver. It was with a good finishing run that tho each-way favourite Don't Lap won the Borough High-weight Handicap after being last five furlongs from home. On Approval showed out first, but Vnlcuir soon assumed command to lead out of the straight and along the back from Royal Winton, Master Musk, On Approval, Virst Lap and Grand Talk, with Don't Lap last. Valcuir was four lengths clear at the half-milo and at the turn was three lengths ahead of Royal "Winton, who was followed by First Lap. Master Musk and Don't Lap. Once into the straight Valcuir began to tire and Royal Wilton challenged. Then Don't Lap came fast on the outside to win by a neck from Royal "Winton, who defeated Valcuir by three-parts of a length. First Lap was fourth, succeeded by Master Musk, On Approval, Grand Talk and Solanio. Defeat of King Ford Don't Lap finished very resolutely after being patiently handled in the early stages. He likes plenty of time to find his feet and on this occasion his rider gave him every chance to settle down. Royal Winton displayed same improvement and was just outstayed at the end. Valcuir, having his first race for some time, showed much of his old dash and it was only when his condition failed near the' end that he surrendered the lead. First Lap did best of the others. On the strength of his good showings in better company at Ellerslio King Ford was made an each-way favourite for tho Flying Handicap, but he had to lower his colours to the improving Lia Fail, who was a good second fancy on both machines. Lia Fail jumped out first, followed by Sirona, King Ford, King Mestor and Hampton Park. Lia Fajl was still in' command entering the straight from Sirona, King Ford and Hampton Park, and she stayed on solidly in tho run home to score by a length from King Ford, who defeated Hampton Park by three-parts of a length. Mungatoon was almost in line fourth, with Sirona right up, and King Mestor last. Lia Fail is steadily on the improve and this was her best performance to date. She began very well and' ran on soundly when I challenged. King Ford made a fair showing, but could make no impression on the winner in the last little bit. Hampton Park, having his first run for some time, shaped very creditably and so did Mungatoon and Sirona. King Mestor ran badly, showing no dash at all. Ballymoney's Good Finish

The each-way favourite Ballymoney finished strongly to score narrowly in the Pipiroa Handicap. Gay Egypt, Lord Willonyx and Valreina were quickly prominent to lead along the back from Instalment, Mungacre, Mountain Breeze, Ballymoney and Lady Zinnia. Valreinix and Lord Willonyx showed the way into the straight to Instalment, Mungacre. Mountain Breeze, Ballymoney and Mustang. Ballymoney then challenged on the outside and got up to win by a head from Lord Willonyx. Mustang, finishing strongly, was a length away third and Valreina was fourth, with Instalment, Day Wind and Lady Zinnia in a bunch next. It was Ballymoney's second win and his best performance to date. Ho was forced to cover some ground on the outside at the turn, but ran on very resolutely. Lord "Willonyx also battled on very gamely after making all the running. Mustang, "who paid a fine price for a place, came from a good way back. Gay Egypt showed up prominently to the turn and should bo all the better for the raco. Mountain Breeze, who made a creditable sliowing._ and Eoxy misbehaved at the post and did not get away in line with the others. The well-supported Boat Song was never dangerous. Another win favourite was successful when Monanui scored in the Goldficlds Cup. The pace was slow early and First Lap eoon ran to the front from Lagoon. Lady Spy and Royal .Artist, who went up second along the. back. First Lap and Royal Artist were together in the lead at the top from Lady Spy and Monanui. who were together ahead of Lagoon and King s Archer. Monanui ran up on the outside of the leaders at the turn and once the straight was reached drew ahead to win comfortably by a neck from King'B Archer, who finished on fai"? well to beat First Lap by a length Royal Artist was fourth, followed by Lady Spy. Lagoon and Alloy. Velocipede Scores

The time, 2.6 2-5, indicated that it was a solidly-run race, but there did not appear to be a great deal of pace on until the field reached the home turn. Heie Monanui dashed up to the leaders and she was always a winner in the straight, where King s Archer ran on solidly. The eecond fancy Velocipede comfortably defeated the favourite. Golden Princess, in the Parawai Stakes. Johnnie Vralls jumped out in front, followed by Application. Velocipede and Golden Princess Johnnie Walls was just in front entering the straight, with Application and Golden Princess handy on the outside and Velocipede on the rails. Just ns they straightened up Velocipede shot through on the f.ence to win by a length from Golden Princess, who finished strongly after losing ground at tho turn. The class was not strong and Velocipede, favoured with a beautiful run on the rails, won handsomely. Golden Princess again displayed a tendency to bore out round tlio turn, otherwise she may have been more difficult to beat. Johnnie Walls, a shapely colt by Acre, showed promise and his condition is susceptible to a good deal of imP Tho m ench-way favourite Gay R . OR . e very narrowly defeated m the PuririHa k Handicap. Gay Rose was first away, fol lowed by Miss Lu, Royal Secret and Air Lassie Roynl Secret went to the front along tl»c back from Miss Lu. Gay Rose and Tord Acre who had run up fast after beginning from' the extreme outside. Royal Secret was first into tho straight from Ford Acre, Miss Lu. Gay Rose and Air Lassie. Miss Lu was in command inside the distance and won by a head from Gay Rose, who came home strongly on the outside Air Lass e was three-parts of a length awny tlnrci. and Royal Secret was fourth. Next, to finish were Lady Zinnia and I'ord Acre.

Win For Karangapai Miss Lu was favoured with the run of th7»ce7bei« in behind the leader until reaching the straight and securing a clenr passage when she moved outwards to challenge. Gay Eosq finished on splendidly after being awkwardly placed at the turn nnd having to go to the outside. Air Lassie ion her best race this season, and Tfoysl Sc< =rct faded only in the last half-furlong after making most of the pace. Lord Aero ma' a big efTort in the early stages and tired in the run home. Scratehingfl reduced the field for the Tlauraki Plains Handicap to four and the favourite, Karangapai, won decisively, i rolyxo found her feet quickest, followed by King Mestor. Karangapai and Whakapara. Kara ngnpai ran to tlie front along the bnc. and at the end of three furlongs was several lengths clear of Prolyxo. with Mestor next aijd Whakapara tailed ofl. Karangapai turned for home with i r> lce ntl " vantage from Prolyxo and King Mcsior and stayed on to win by a length and a-halt from King Mestor. who beat. Prolyxo by half a head. Whakapara was some lengths away last. , . Gaining the lead early. Karangapai galloped in his best style nnd never appeared to be in danger of defeat. King Mestor and Prolyxo had a keen tussle for second. King Mestor doing better than in Ins previous outing and just securing the position. Whakapara racpd ungenerously and was always in the rear.
