RINKS CONTEST
PLAY COMMENCES TO-DAY TWO ROUNDS IN SECTIONS HOLDERS DEFENDING TITLE The annual tournament conducted by the New Zealand Bowling Association will be continued this morning. Play will begin with section rounds in the rinks championship, and will be continued to-morrow, Monday and Tuesday, when the section rounds will he completed. Two games of 25 heads will be played each day. The first game will commence at 9.30 a.m. and the second game at 2.15 p.m. Post-section play will commence on the day following the conclusion of section pla.v. Any team which wins six or more games in its section will qualify for the post-section rounds.
One hundred and sixty-four rink teams have entered, making in all 656 individual contestants. This number compares with 98 teams last year, when the tournament was held in Dunedin. The 164 teams have been divided into 16 sections and will play upon the greens of the following clubs: —Auckland, Carlton, Ilemuera, Epsom, Mount Eden, Ponsonbv, Devonport, Mount Albert, Grey Lynn, Balmoral, Onehunga, Ellerslie, Hillsborough, Waitemata, Te Papapa and Hallyburton Johnstone. It will be noted that a change has been made the usual metho'd of conducting rink championships in Auckland from three games of 21 heads each day to two games of 25 heads. Defending Title
The holders of the championship, G. Dickson, F. Hodpath, H. F. Gibsoifc H. Wilson, of the Liuwood Club, Cnristchurch, will defend their title, and will appear upon the Hallyburton Johnstone Club's green to-day, the Bal•moral Club on Saturday, Carlton on Monday, and Mount Men on Tuesday. They aro not opposed in their section by teams which have proved outstanding in big bowling events. Nevertheless it is one of the charms of the game that bowlers of average merit can at times produce the highest standard of play. Good opposition will certainly be given by Clcary, Garvey, Darlington and Little (Hamilton). Little, a past Grey Lynn member, has done well since he went into the South Auckland Centre and is playing good bowls at the present time. Pausina, Meek, Purdy, Yukicli (Kaikohe) form an unknown quantity in these tournaments. The skip, Yukicli, is particularly good with his fast work and has done well in tho northern town. A St. John's combination under Stone, teams headed by Lavzeli * (Devonport), Findlay (Mount Eden), Smeed (Tuakau), Morton (Otahuhu) and Lamb (Carlton) should give good games against the champion team. Section A has Cave, Campbell, McBeath, Campbell (Mount Eden), the team that did so well in tho recent tournament at Christmas. Jones, Gifford, Maher, Maher (Auckland) comprise four sound players, who should combine well in teamwork. Twice Champion Skip The B section has five teams of good calibre—Carbines, Gates, Jury, Jury (Ponsonby), Whiting, Blackburn, Wilson, Hickman (Poverty Bay), Clanev, Hinchcliff, Lloyd, Claridge (Caledonian), Bull, Maslin, Squire, Murray (Hawera), and Mayson, Scott, Higginson, Hosking (Grey Lynn). E. Jury has been twice champion skip of the Dominion. Maslin and Squire, body men of the Hawera combination, are 1933 winners of the pairs championship, while Squire has proved that he is in form by beating the singles champion, W. Oarswell, twice and eliminating him from that competition for this season.
Section C embraces Walker, Moon, Peai.se, Taylor (Mount Eden), the team which came through the Christmas tourney with nine wins in section rounds; Harrison, Leslie, Buchan, Ferguscn (Balmacewan), a sound team; Arthur, \arris, Routlv, Smith (Kelburn); atul Jackson, Watson, Sullivan, Lundon (Devonport). The Kelburn team is particularly good. This section should bo well fought. Four teams of good merit appear in section D. Orsborn, O'Gorman, Ingram, Parkhouse (Wellington), includes two past winners of the championship singles title, Ingram and Parkhouse. Swney, Hansson, Pearce, Hollard (Putaruru), Watkins, Norris, White, Wright (St. Heliers), and Buxton, Moir, Clarke, Jenkin (Carlton), are nil strong combinations, the last-mentioned particularly so. Four teams of fine calibre also appear in section E. They are McGee, Wakefield, Beer, Engebretsen (Napier), Tamblvn, Gladding, Dowland, Adess (St. Hilda), Oughton, Tongue, Hill, Loram (llocky Nook), and Wyatt, Bradanovich, Bish, Hosking (Pukekohe). In the Napier team is Engebretsen, one of the two players who went through the singles division of the tourney up to the existing stage without a loss, winning ten games iti excellent style. Rigby, Gregory, Gardiner, Hutchinson (Dtinedin), in section F comprise a rink team of the highest merit. Rigby, lead, is a past winner of tlio singles championship. Gregory and Gardiner wore the body men of Deare's team which did such fine bowling when it won the rinks championship here four years ago. Faire, Needham, Hardley, Bremner (West End), has for the skip a fine general who has brought teams home to victory on two occasions before, besides figuring prominently in other divisions of Dominion tourneys. Davis, Mclnnes, North, Gee (Te Awainutu), and Duncan', Jenkin, Higgott, do Lnunay (Carlton), make up sound teams. The Awakino combination, Brown, Richards, Northern, Bartlett, is also good. Section G includes Plummer, Anchor, Stewart, Bell (Hamilton) and Clarke, Winks, Bourke, Foy (Hawera). The first-mentioned has Stewart, a South Auckland champion of champions, and Norrie 8011, a veteran avlio is one of the soundest bowlers and winner of many big events of the past. Stephens, Macklow, Livingstone, Robertson (Onohunga), Rowling, Huchins, Wright, Benefield (St. Johns) and Johnson, Springhall, Goodwin, Naylor (Thorudon) make up very strong teams indeed for section H. Walker, Wrightson, Torrance, Lancaster (Carlton) and Pomeroy, Loveridge, Hawken, Pilkington (Hamilton) are two excellent.teams, the latter having as skip the winner of many big bowling . events, including the rinks championship. They both appear in section J. Teams under Blighting (Hataitai), Wilkinson (Cromwell), Harrison (Auckland) and Parsons (Ponsonbv) should give the best standard of the game if on form. Brigliting, with Dr. Shore, gave a fine exhibition in this event four years ago. Casay, Bruco, Luscombe, Lobb (New Plymouth) is fi very strong combination of strong bowlers. Siiiule (Glen Eden) heads a team of good ability in section I, while Newman (Thames), Kerr (Onehunga), Coburn (Ponsonby) and Brackenridge (Lyall Bay) have sound bowling combinations .in section M. Paget, Blood, Wilson, Mingins (Epsom) and teams headed by Skoglund (Stratford) and Brookfield (St. Heliers) are the best combinations of section N. league, Tongue, Caddy, Buckley (Grey Lynn), Broughton, Wilson, noli, Richmond (Epsom) and Buchan, Margison, Powell, Buchan (Te Aroha) are .three teams of sound merit in tion 0.
