WAIOEKA ROAD WASHOUT

DIFFICULTY FOR MOTORISTS

SERVICE CARS MAINTAINED

[by telegraph—own correspondent]

GISBORXE, Friday

Conditions, are still difficult at the washout on the Waioeka Road, which was not recommended for traffic today. A continuation of rain in the valley has handicapped the roadmen in opening the ford at CSltaott's Crossing, which is the one that gave the greatest trouble on Wednesday, when 2ft. of water was reported to be running over it.

An attempt was being made with sand bags to improve the approach to the ford, but it was not likely that it would be suitable for private cars for a few days. The resident patrol of the Automobile Association visited the locality yesterday, and reported from Matawai this morning that the Waioeka Road to-day was not recommended for private motorists. The position also was doubtful for tomorrow.

Service cars have been able to use the road without being delayed. Drivers who reached Gisborne fro" 1 Opotiki last night said that, with their heavy vehicles, there was u" serious difficultv.
