TONGARIRO FISHING
RECENT FRESH IN RIVER GOOD SPORT EXPECTED [by telegraph—own correspondent] TURAXGI, Friday Very heavy rain caused the Tongariro River to rise considerably during the last two days, with the result that fishing was impossible. However, the flood waters are now receding and good fishing can be looked for > to-morrow. Prior to the rain some very good bags had been taken on the dry fly.
While the Tongariro River was not fishable anglers devoted themselves to the Tauranga-Taupo stream, where some very good sport was to be had. A party of Wellington anglers secured an average of five fish a rod there yesterday. The fish, although on the small side, were in excellent condition. On Wednesday Mr. McLellan, of Scotland, dry fly fishing in the lower reaches of the Tongariro, took 10 fish, all in good condition.
The weather is now fine and the many anglers in the neighbourhood are looking for a good run of fish in the Tongariro River as the result of the fresh.
