SHIP'S CALL FOR DOCTOR
LIFEBOAT'S VAIN CHASE
Drama was connected with a steamer's S.O.S. call for a doctoi which caused excitement in the Luglish Channel a few weeks ago. The vessel, thought to be tho Silverthorn, of London, was seen steaming toward Deal flying signals denoting" she required tho immediate assistance of a doctor. A south-wpsterly gale was* raging, and made the seas too rough to permit of motor-boats being launched from Deal. Tho Walmer motor-lifeboat was hastily got ready, and Dr. Dudley Kirk, Deal's borough medical officer, was urgently summoned. He boarded the waiting lifeboat, which put out into the storm. A great struggle ensued, in which the lifeboat made every effort to reach "the steamer, but without success. After returning with his mission unfulfilled, the coxswain, Captain Harry Pearson, said, " Wo chased tho steamer for some five milcfc.
" Wo ploughed our way through the heavy seas, much to Dr. Kirk's discomfort, but never got within a mile of the steamer. When eventually she shaped a course for Boulogne, our task was hopeless."
