TRAIN DERAILED
SLEEPER ON THE TRACK CHILDREN'S MISCHIEVOUS ACT SYDNEY, Jan. 3 Mischievous children residing in the vicinity of the Darling Harbour goods assembling yards caused a serious tram accident last evening. Fortunately nobody was injured. The children placed a wooden sleeper across the rails in the path of an out-ward-bound western goods train which struck the obstacle when travelling at a speed of 20 miles an hour. The locomotive and four leading trucks left the rails and ploughed into a steep embankment. Several heavily-loaded waggons in the centre of the train were telescoped and piled 50 feet in the air, miscellaneous goods and merchandise being scattered in all directions.
The damage is estimated at thousands of pounds. The engine crew escaped with a severe shaking and shock.
The children watched the accident and then ran away.
