UNSETTLED CONDITIONS

SCATTERED RAINS LIKELY

The weather report and forecast for New Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, was as follows:—A depression still covers New Zealand, but is moving eastward, while a fresh one is situated over the south-western portion of the Tasman Sea. The indications are for westerly winds at first north of Cook Strait, but south-westerly •to southerly soon prevailing generally; force, moderate to strong. Seas rather rough to rough. In the eastern Tasman Sea, moderate -to strong south-westerly winds, veering soon to northerlies in central and southern portions; seas rather rough. Weather still unsettled, with scattered rains in most districts and thunder in places. Cool temperatures. A temporary improvement, however, should gradually set in. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST CHANGEABLE AND SQUALLY The Government meteorologist issued to the Hfhai,i» last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province:—Moderato to strong westerly winds backing to south-westerly soon. Weather changeable and squally with passing showers and thunder in places. Cooler temperatures. Seas rough. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland.—Variable conditions were experienced yesterday, when periods of bright sunshine were interspersed with showers. There were heavy showers during the night. In the morning there was a strong breeze from the north-north-east, but later the wind was from the west and north-west. After being steady at 29.60 in. throughout the day, the barometer rose in the evening, and at midnight the reading was 29.70 in. The temperature at 4 p.m. was 75 degrees. Barometer, midnight, steady . . 29.70 in. Midnight, Wednesday .. 29.60 in, Wellington.—The weather was fine *md warm, but rather cloudy, and there was a gusty nor-westerly wind. Ihe maximum temperature was 74.3 in. Christchurch.—The weather was overcast yesterday morning, with frequent passing showers, and the afternoon was fine, but dull. A fresh south-* westerly wind blew all day. Tho maximum temperature was 62.9 degrees, and tho barometer registered 29.53 in. at 5 p.m. Dunedin.—Heavy showers fell in Dunedin yesterday, and there was a moderate south-westerly wind.
