"Ot:.e of the pluckiest, and most astonishing rides I have ever seen" •was the description applied by one official -to the ride from Sydney to Melbourne by Miss "Bitlie" Samuel in record cycling time. Her time was $ : days 1 hour 27 minutes, thus breaking the record of 3 days 7 hours 32 minutes, held by Mrs. Barbour, by 6 hours 5 minutes. Mrs. Barbour was one of the first to congratulate Miss Samuel before an .enthusiastic gathering of . about 2000 people. Miss Samuel appeared fit in spite of her strenuous trip of 5(18 miles., feel fine," she said, with the cheery -smile that made her popular throughout the-ride, . In the last stage she, left Seympur at 6.20 a.m., and'. • with only one stop at, .Kilmore for breakfast, rode home strongly. Her average speed for the journey was about 10 to 12 miles an hour. Several well-known cyclists rode to meet her at Craigieburn. Miss Samuel learned to ride a bicj r cle only a few months ago. She is less than 7st. in weight, and only 4ft. llin. .in height.
