TEACHER REFUSED LEAVE
PROPOSED VISIT TO RUSSIA DEPUTATION TO MINISTER [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday A deputation waited 011 the Minister of Education, the Hon. R. Masters, to protest against the action of the Wellington Education Board in refusing to grant six months' leave of absence without pay to Mr. M. Riske, a teacher employed by the board, for the purpose of visiting Russia. "1 should like to say that this question docs not come under my jurisdiction," said the Minister in reply to the deputation. "1 have no jurisdiction whatever over the matter of whether or not Mr. Riske goes to Russia. So far as resigning is concerned Mr. Riske may do so if he wishes. Ho is just as entitled to a position on his return as anyone else. He may apply for any position in New Zealand, and provided he has the right grading he must be considered. I cannot alter the board's decision. As a matter of fact I have never interfered with the administrative affairs of education boards and I do not intend to make a precedent in this case."
