FELLOWSHIP AWARDED
PUBLIC WORKS OFFICER RESEARCH IN AMERICA [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday An assistant designing engineer of the Public Works Department, Mr. C. W. Turner, has been awarded a Commonwealth service fellowship. He will proceed to California in the near future to take up the fellowship. Mr. Turner proposes to inquire thoroughly into the latest methods that are being followed in the United States for the deßign of strucures, particularly for earthquakeresisting types. He will also study modern American design in the construction of general engineering structures, particularly of bridges and other public works. The fellowships, which are the American counterpart of the Rhodes scholarships, were created by the directors of the Commonwealth fund of the New York Philanthropic Foundation, the object being that of promoting mutual amity and understanding between the British Empire and the United States.
