MISS JEAN BATTEN

VISIT TO HAMILTON AN ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION [FROM OUR OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Wednesday The New Zealand girl flier, Miss Jean Batten, arrived at Te Rapa aerodrome, Hamilton, this morning, after having flown from Auckland in her own machine. She was escorted by two Moth aeroplanes, flown by FlightLieutenant S. Wallingford and Mr. A. N. Breckon, jun., of Auckland. The party was met near Taupiri by two Auckland Aero Club's Moths from To Rapa, and also by a Desoutter, flown by Mr. S. J. Blackmore. There was a crowd of about 200 people at the aerodrome, where Miss Batten was welcomed by the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr. J. R. Fow. Later a civic reception was given, nearly 1000 residents assembling to cheer Miss Batten. Tho speakers were Mr. Fow and tho deputy-mayor, Air. H. D. Caro. In roply, Miss Batten expressed thanks for the enthusiastic reception she had been given. In the afternoon, Miss Batten attended a reception in her honour arranged by tho Lyceum Club and other women's organisations. She met Dr. Mary Douglas, tho only local woman pilot, who flew ono of tho club machines that welcomed tho visitor to tho district. Miss Batten will also spend tomorrow in Hamilton.
