LONDON'S TRANSPORT
BOARD'S FIRST BIRTHDAY TREMENDOUS ORGANISATION (Received June 18, 5.5 p.m.) E'ritish Wireless RUGBY, June 17 The Passenger Transport Board, which is undoubtedly the greatest urban transport organisation in the world, will shortly celebrate its first birthday. Remarkable smoothness and efficiency has marked the result of the coordination of services. The board comprises 92 concerns —five railways, 17 tramways, 62 omnibus, four coach and four subsidiary undertakings—and has a total capital of approximately £109,000,000. Its staff numbers 62,000 and it owns a total of 11,550 passenger vehicles. The board serves an area of 2000 square miles and a population of approximately 9,400,000, or nearly onequarter that of England and Wales. In 1933, its undertakings carried 3,500,000,000 passengers. This is equal to conveying every day almost as many people as there are in the whole of Canada and more than the combined population of Scotland and Ireland.
