COUNTRY WEEK TOURNAMENT EIGHTEEN TEAMS COMPETE SEVERAL CLOSE MATCHES The annual Country Week tournament conducted by the Auckland Hockey Association and the Auckland Ladies' Hockey Association was opened at Remuera yesterday afternoon. The tourney is held with the object of fostering interest in the game among the various sub-associations Jn the province and to facilitate the playing of matches between widely separated districts. Eighteen teams took part. The principal trophy in the men's competition, the White Horse Cup, is at present held by Waipa, and the subsidiary trophy, the Captain "White Cup, is held jointly by Rodney and Whangarei. The trophies in the ladies' competition aro the Provincial Cup, for the winners, and the Twiname Cup, for the runners-up. The former is held by the Auckland A team and the latter by Paeroa. In the men's matches yesterday a different stylo of hockey from that seen in city club matches was displayed. Although most teams lacked combination, as tho members had not played together to any extent, some good individual work was seen. Combination should show an all-round improvement . by the end of the week. Some very fine stickwork was witnessed, playei'B having splendid control of tho ball. As country grounds are usually somewhat rougher than those at Remuera, very hard hitting was general in most . games. Rodney A had little difficuty in beating Whakatane by six goals to one, but tho' association's B team lost to Waipa by seven goals to nil. Whangarei had a hard-fought game with Piako and eventually prevailed by throe goals to two, while ThameHHauraki beat Franklin by two goals to nil. The best ladies' game of the day was tho friendly match between Thames (three) and Paeroa (two), a good standard being, shown thioughout. Tli-s other games were rather lagged, but the standard should improve »u combination is acquired. ResuJ's were as follows: WHITE HORSE CUP Rodney A, 6 (J. Grimmer 4, T. Grimmer, C.
