AUCKLAND MEETING

GOOD ,VISITING HORSES STRONG WAIKATO TEAM MANY WITH RECENT FORM The presence of the well-performed ✓visiting horses, Chenwood, Tempest, Arabond, Smooger, Compass, and Max Havoo is creating special interest in the Auckland Trotting Club's winter meeting, which opens at Alexandra Park, Epsom to-morrow. Chenwood, 4.22 ]-o, Tempest, 4.24 2-5, Smooger 4.31 3-5 and Arabond 4.34 2-5, represent high class, and are worthy of the place allotted to them in the principal races. Compass, with a two-year-old grass track record -of 3.23 4-5, and Max Havoc 3.27, are engaged in the improvers' classes. Tempest- and Arabond ha\e on at Epsom on previous occasions, while Chenwood nud Smooger have gained seconds. Compass and Max oc are strangers to Auckland, but their respective sires,/ Man-o'-War and Maxegin have raced successfully at Alexandra Park, and Havoc, maternal grand sire of Max Havoc, also won here. Waikato stables are represented by 14 horses, including Impromptu, who has now reached the highest piano of Dominion pacers. He has recently taken grass records of 2.4 1-5 and 3.13 4-5 for a mile and a mile and a-half respectively, and attracted further attention by his defeat at Epsom of Red Shadow and Harold Logan on a track that was more suitable to his rivals than to him, and again by his great effort at Wellington in running Harold Logan to a head. Other Recent Winners / Other horses from Waikato who have won during the Auckland circuit are Bingen Chief, Jackie Thorpe, Willie I Derbv, Alexis, Kewpie's Bond, Try- j ment. Lady Amanda has recently regis- j tered two" seconds, while Our Peter, j Home Brew, and Electric Bell were j winners earlier. The high-class First j Flight, in spite of the fact that she j has not won this season, will add strength to the Waikato contingent. There aj-e nine horses from Otahuhu and Mangere, less than the usual number, but most of them have reasonable j prospects. The trotters Bessie Parrish j and Gala Day are among the best in their classes, while the pacers Francis Lincoln, llingtrue, Lady Coronado, and Manco should all race prominently. Takanini-trained horses number eight, including the consistent winners, Worthy Light, Chancellor, Kewpie's King, and ! Nell Volo, while Wrecker, Explosion, and Gold Dredge have all won this season. The remaining candidate, Ganton, has s'till to win a race in the province. Candidates from North The North Auckland representatives, Min Bells, Red Hope, and Gumdigger are familiar figures at Epsom, and although Red Hope has recently failed to show his best form, they should make their events very interesting. On her Clamdelands displays Min Bells must be respected in her engagements. Epsom stables will produce 29 ■horse? on the first day. The highergrade horses. Auto Machine, Kewpie's Triumph, Peter Pirate, Wilma Dillon, Brentlight, Dan Direct, Free Logan, and Realty should provide stout opposition in their races, while the trotters, Moko Girl, Mr. Penalty, Roi Grande, Billy Carbine. and Manna's Son should all race usefully. ARRIVAL OF A. BRYCE / ENGAGED FOR MAX HAVOC / The Canterbury reinsman A. Bryce has arrived at Epsom and will drive the Hutt Park pacer Max Havoc in his Auckland engagements. Bryce has for several seasons driven horses owned and trained by Mr. T. Leadbetter, and has had a' good measure of success with them.- As he is engaged to drive Max Havoc, no driver is yet announced for Red Hope, who is in the same race, has on some previous occasions been driven by him. / NELSON TROTTING VISITOR OWNER OF LEE NORRIS // / —• Mr. T. Neuman. of Nelson, who for several years raced a good team of trotters, is visiting Auckland for the winter meeting. Mr. Neuman had much succc-ss with Peter_ King, a high-class pacer, and the American- trotter, Lee Norris, whom he imported to New Zealand. Lee Norris, who is by Manrico from Blanche Norris, has done/ well in Southland as a sire, and this season has been represented by several winners. Teviot Downs, one of the best trotters produced in Southland, is a son of Lee Norris. ADAMS MEMORIAL CUP BAD RACE FOR FAVOURITES A remarkable feature of the Adams Memorial Cup contests is the fact that m twelve races for the trophy, and three previous ones when the race was known as the Adams Memorial Handicap, only one fav--l Jl een successful. This was in 1930 when Harold Logan, who was then making his way to the top of the tree, won in a jog. Only three favourites, namely. Pageant, 1928. Colorado, 1932, and I'eterwah (bracketed with Doll), 1933# li&vo e\en leturned second dividends. The greatest outsider to win was Uncle ' Bert in 1927, while Rercmai, 1929. and No-in"o- - were also littlo fancied Other good-priced winners were Ballin, 1922 the first cup winner, Jewel, 1924, first winner of the race at two miles, Goldman 1905 and Taipare, 1328. . ' Peter Pirate, who won in 1932, will be having his fourth race in this event He was runner-up to Ngingongingo. and finished fourth last year, when Kewpie'* Triumph won. To-morrow's field is a really good one. Tempest, Arabond, Wrecker, Worthy Light, Willie Derby, Brentlight and' Chenwood, who are all handily placed*. have good two miles form, and although the backmarkers, Peter Pirate and Auto Machine, are,not without prospects, the favourites are'likely to come from those nearer tho 1 limit. Worthy Light has won well four times at the distance, and if he is the stable elect, he should take a lot of beating. He may find Willie Derby hard to beat off the same mark, 4.32. Willie Derby has won four races, including two at tho cup distance, in convincing style, and his effort in running Chancellor, 4.38. very close off 4.32. at Hum ilton, and registering 4.27 4-5, faster time than Worthy Light has accomplished, enh Juices .his prospects. Wrecker also rucex soundly/ at the distance, while if Chenwood •or Tempest could reproduce their best southern form, they would make it difficult tor tho northerners to defeat them. However, it is very likely that favouritism will ICB i •£ "W° rl hy Light-Wrecker bracket and Willie Derby. JUVENILES AT TE AWAMUTU SEVEN IN A. COOK'S STABLE The Te Awamutu trainer, A.
