ADDRESS TO JURY

NO WITNESSES CALLED

CROWN CASE ATTACKED COMMENT ON THEORIES No evidence was called by counsel defending William Alfred Bayly when the Crown case was completed in the Supreme Court yesterday morning. After a short adjournment following the conclusion of the evidence, the Crown Prosecutor, Mr. Meredith, addressed the jury, and he completed his outline of the Crown's allegations before lunch. Mr. Northcroft, senior counsel for Bayly, was engaged throughout the afternoon with his address, and he will continue this morning. As it has not called witnesses the defence has the final right of appeal to the jury before the Judge's summing-up. The number of witnesses called by the Crown was 68, and nine were recalled. A conservative estimate of the number of words in the depositions, which occupy 483 typewritten sheets, is about: 200,000. The trial is before Mr. Justice Herdman. Mr. Meredith, who spoke for just over an hour and a-half during his address, has Mr. McCarthy associated with him. Mr. Leary is appearing with Mr. Northcroft. Bayly is charged with murdering Samuel Pender Lakey and Christabel Lakey, his neighbours, at Ruawaro on October 15. Mrs. Bayly, wife of accused, was present in Court during Mr. Northcroft's address.
