NEW JUDGE WELCOMED
MR. JUSTICE FAIR .AUCKLAND DUTIES ASSUMED Mr. Justice Fair, who Was recently elevated to the Supreme Court Bench, commenced his duties as a resident Judge in Auckland yesterday. He has succeeded Mr. Justice Smith, who will in future be stationed in Wellington. At an informal gathering held in th<> new Judge's chambers at the SupremeCourt yesterday morning, members of the council of the Auckland Distinct Law Society tendered their respects His Honor, while the vice-president of the society, Mr. L. K. Munro, in the absence of the president, Mr. G. P. Finla.y, welcomed him to Auckland on behalf of the legal practitioners. In returning thanks. His Honor said that during the brief period he hacl been on the Bench his relations with the profession had been of a most friendly nature, and he had every hope that they would continue to be so. His Honor has not j-et sat in Auckland, although he has presided at sittings of the Supreme Court in Hamilton. Prior to being appointed a Judge to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr. Justice MacGregor, he was for nine years' Solicitor-General.
