burning of the body WIFE IMMERSED IN POND J : The case for the Crown against William Alfred Bayly, farmer, aged 28, of murdering Samuel Pender Lakey and his wife, Christabel Lakey, at Ruawaro on October 15 last was revealed in the Supreme Court yesterday before Mr. Justice Herdman when the Crown Prosecutor, Mr. Meredith, made his opening address to the jury. This occupied the whole of the day.* The accused followed Mr. Meredith closely and made notes frequently. Two brief adjournments were taken during the day in addition to the usual luncheon adjournment. The Court rose at 4.50 p.m., the Crown Prosecutor having spoken for almost five hours. The hearing of evidence will commence at 10 a.m. today with the calling of several technical witnesses, who are to identify plans and photographs. They will be followed by settlers from Ruawaro.
