SHARE OF PETROL TAX
TRANSPORT BOARD'S MOVE
AMENDMENT OF ACT WANTED
"There is no provision under which it would bo possiblo for a tramway authority to bo paid a portion of the motor spirits revenue, and, therefore, it is not possible for me to favourably consider your representations," f.nd tho Minister of Public Works, the Hon. ,T. Bitchener, in a letter received by the Auckland Transport Board yesterday. "It would appear that the circumstances affect more particularly your board and the municipal authority, and that you should approach the Auckland City Council for any relief considered desirable, ' added the letter. It was decided to write again to the Minister, informing him that, owing to tho large number of local bodies in the Auckland area, it was impracticable to make the arrangement suggested, and to urge that the legislation be amended to give tramway authorities tho right to a share of the tax. "The Christchurch Tramways Board and ourselves are the only ones affected," said the chairman, Mr. J. A. C. A Hum, "but our case is tho more urgent as I believe we are the only tramway authority which pays rates."
