PAVING A HIGHWAY
TAKAPUN A-DEVONPORT ROAD NO DECISION REACHED The permanent, paving of a stretch of the Takapuna-Devonport main highway between Belmont and the Devonport Borough boundary was further considered at a special meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council last evening. No decision was reached. Known officially as Walter's Hill, but more generally to residents as "no man's land," this short stretch of road between two sections of concrete highway has been the cause of dispute by successive councils for a number o* years. A resolution that, if funds were available, the section should bo permanently surfaced was 7)nssed at a previous council meeting and proposals for tar-sealing and concreting received consideration. „ , ~ T Tho Mayor, of Takapuna, Mr. J. Guiniven, who presided last evening, said he was of the opinion that the financial state of tho borough would not permit of expenditure for construction of the carriageway in concrete. If a strip 10ft. Gin. wide, as was previously suggested, was laid down now it would necessitate another strip being laid e xt vear and this would further financially distress tho borough. 1' urthciinoic, a single strip would bo dangerous owing to the configuration of the locality. Mr. F. Gibson said it was false economy to use tar and that the stictch should be set do\« n with concrete. It was decided that estimates of cost were necessary before any decision could be made.
