BEAUTIFYING TAURANGA
ACTIVITIES OF SOCIETY SUGGESTIONS TO COUNCIL [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] ' TATJUAjS'GA, Friday The Tauranga Beautifying Society lias decided to write to the Borough. Council requesting it to provide more seats both in Herries Park and at frequent intervals along the streets; to consult the society before cutting down or lopping any trees on the streets or parks; to proclaim prohibited areas in, all streets which were planted, so as to prevent damage to trees or plants by cars; to exercise its powers to enforce the tidying up of many neglected and unsightly fences and hedges on the road frontages, particularly in prominent positions in the borough; and to refuse permission for any further individual tree planting in the streets except in conjunction with the society, as the presence of scattered trees of different varieties along a street must hinder development of orderly planting, which was what the society was aiming at. The president and secretary were appointed to interview the officer in charge of employment regarding securing unemployed men to prepare holes for tree planting and similar work. It was decided to approach the committee in charge of the high school agricultural course with a request that it should take steps to improve the appearance of the high school reserve frontages on Brown and Chapel Streets. It was further decided that with a view to improving the appearance of the streets the society should offer prizes for the best gardens as viewed from the footpaths.
