EARLY MORNING FIRE FAMILY'S RUDE AWAKENING [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] GISBGRNE, Thursday When they discovered that their home at Manutuke was on fire, Mr. and Mrs. Patterson and their three children had to make a hurried escape through a window. The outbreak occurred early in the morning, Mr. Patterson being awakened by a crackling sound. On leaving his bed to investigate he was almost overcome by smoke, and found that the flames had already spread to such an extent as to make exit, except through the window, impossible. The house, which was leased by Mr. Patterson from the Commissioner of Crown ■ Lands, was totally destroyed. The building was insured for £SOO. HOUSE AT REMUERA FLAMES SWEEP ONE ROOM Fire gutted one room of a nineroomed house at 4 Pino Street, Bemuera, owned by Mr. J. P. Evans, of Groat South Road, and occupied by Mr. A. P. All port, shortly before five o'clock, yesterday afternoon. The other rooms of the house were damaged by heat and smoke.
The occupants were absent at the time. Little difficulty was experienced by the Rcnniera and .Ellerslio brigades in extinguishing the outbreak. The house was insured in the Victoria Office for £I2OO and tho contents in the Royal Office for £l/30.
